These songs are stunning. This project is going to be absolutely beautiful. When you invite people to give to this, they are not going to have any idea just how great the thing will be that you're inviting them to. You're giving people a gift with this opportunity to help make this record.”

The concept

Art by Martin Howard

The Mo(µ)rning EPs are a collection of songs about the personal presence & protection of Spirit as we encounter the disordering & reordering of our lives.

These are songs about resurrection & the death that resurrection requires.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken teaware by mending the breaks with lacquer mixed with gold.

It creates a work of beauty through brokenness. The breaks are highlighted, not hidden. The new, restored piece is considered even more beautiful than the original. The art, the mending, the healing gives not just a "fixed" object, but a new creation. The Mo(µ)rning EPs tell this story.

Hear the demos

The Mo(µ)rning EPs project is designed as two, 6-song companion releases:

  • The Mourning EP, and

  • The Morning EP.

The songs are already written. You can hear the demos in the player on this page.

Two of songs are already fully produced and released everywhere!

"Anchor to the Wind" and "Fly With You (A Song to Myself)" can give you a picture of how the other songs will come alive with your investment.

About the songs on this project

I didn’t set out to make a concept album. The theme appeared just like the songs have.

I've found that songwriting is more a capturing of what emerges than it is an inventing.

Of the dozens of songs I’ve written in the past few years, these 12 share a thread that feels archetypal to our shared experience of pain, disorientation, and, eventually, finding ourselves.

These songs are for us.

Listen with the lyrics in hand

It’s only fitting that you would be able to really see the art that you’ll be helping to create.

You can help make this project

The Mo(µ)rning EPs are a community-funded record project.

Most of us may not have the funds to build a new wing of a museum or underwrite an orchestra.

But perhaps we can make this work of art together.

It will be even better if you join in.

To arrange a call to discuss the project before becoming patron, please contact me. We can review the investor deck together, and I can answer any questions you have.

What does it mean to be a patron?

  • Mixing
To blend the sounds together at appropriate levels.

  • Mastering
It's a dark art. Don't ask. No one knows what this is, but it's critical.

  • Travel

Ideas for patron "tiers"

Don't know how much to give as a patron? Here are some notes on costs associated with making the record.

$500

Thanks to Jeremy's connections, it costs about $500 to pay another musician to participate and bring more textures and instruments to the project.

Choose your gift: piano / drums / keys+synth / cello / bass / percussion / electric guitar / pedal steel.

$900

I'm working with a producer who believes in this project, is a patron himself, and who is working at this generous per-song rate.

Choose the particular song you'd like to be the executive producer for (Track 1-12).

$---

You know the deal.

We all can give differently at different times. I'm hopeful you'll be a part of this project at any amount that’s good for you.

🙏

“If I try to crystallize the change of mind I’m experiencing midlife and mid-career, it is some version of this question: How can I write to light up the night?… It’s a conviction about communication, a sense of calling to be a very different kind of writer—not simply a philosopher with ideas to teach but a co-pilgrim alongside my neighbors, all of us wondering if the darkness will overwhelm us. I want to string together words that bear witness to the light in a way that people don’t just understand but can stake their hope upon.”
— James K.A. Smith

We’re doing this because there's a "here" here

It’s all unexpected.

The momentum started when I would suddenly start crying when writing these songs.

Then friends would hear the demos and say, “Yes, dude.”

I saw that the songs were actually describing a similar path that all of us may encounter in one way or another.

Then people at shows would say they experienced something.

Then Jeremy Casella said, “Come record a couple songs.”

Then those couple songs turned out to be 🔥.

We want to keep going, but don’t want to do it alone. Will you be a part of the community that makes this full album as art for the wider world?

This is what it will sound like

These four singles are already fully produced, mixed, mastered, and released on all streaming platforms. Here you can get a sense of where we're going with the record sonically.

The song demos above will be turned into tracks that sound like these.

About the budget & your investment

We’re going for it.

We could make The Mo(µ)rning EPs by recording only one voice and one guitar... and it would be great.

But.

There’s a bigger opportunity here.

  • We have musicians lined up who have played on Grammy-winning records.

  • Our post-Covid lives can welcome this new shared experience of making something new.

  • The song demos have already impacted people.

We have a chance to one day look back at this moment right now and say,

"I helped make this."

What early listeners to the demos have said

Thanks for sharing these songs with me. They’ve helped me be a better pastor and a better parent.
— Pastor (Virginia)
I’ve listened through it many multiple times this morning while reading the lyrics and the chorus is now totally stuck in my brain... inviting but somewhat dangerous in that it invites an introspective journey.
— Technology Executive (Maryland)

Will you be a patron of this work?

I've contributed to other artists' projects before. If your experience is at all like mine, here's what you'll discover:

  • You'll help make a record that is stunningly beautiful and substantial.

  • You'll be able to tell folks "I helped make this" when it's done.

  • You'll be connected to the process as we go.

  • You'll get all the perks listed above, including tickets to the RELEASE PARTY with all food and drinks included, an original art piece, access to patrons-only groups, and more. It’s gonna be fun.

Become a patron of the arts. Become a patron of this particular work. Thank you so, so much.

We discover joy comes in the mo(µ)rning.

What's up with the "µ"?

• It's the standard gravitational parameter of a celestial body. It's the value that represents the strength of something's gravity.

• It's the coefficient of friction. It's the ratio of two forces: the friction between two bodies and the force of what's pressing them together.

• It's the electric mobility of a charged particle. It's the ability of charged particles (such as electrons or protons) to move through a medium in response to what's pulling them.

• It's the unbounded search operator. It's the operator that looks for the smallest number to satisfy a given property.

• It's the Möbius function. It inverts certain number-theoretic relations. It's differentiating.

• It's the population mean. It's the expected value, a measure of the central tendency of a data set.

• It's the Greek numeral 40. Like, years wandering in desert. Or days fasting in the desert. Or the beginning of the next phase of life.

µ is what marks the difference between mourning and morning.
